Who is the best practitioner to treat my condition?

When you injure yourself, you may be left wondering who the best practitioner is to help you return to your pre-injury form. Understanding the difference between physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths and who is best to manage your condition is often confusing. As your GP’s most recommended allied health professional, physiotherapists are well positioned to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent movement disorders. This stems from a strong foundation of evidence-based practice that physiotherapy operates upon. Although chiropractic and osteopathic treatments are increasing in popularity, they often lack the same robust evidence to support the effectiveness of these treatments. This isn’t to say that you won’t find a good chiropractor or osteopath whose treatments are effective, just that generally speaking the paradigm in which physiotherapy operates is supported by more evidence.

This is where the key point lies… in choosing the right practitioner for you, whether a physio, chiro or osteo, the most important thing is to find an evidenced based practitioner. Key things to be mindful of are false promises of a cure or claiming too much credit for natural recovery. Beyond this, you shouldn’t be a passive recipient of treatment. A good practitioner will involve you in your recovery by teaching you effective ways to manage your injury away from the clinic and helping you train to prevent re-injury. Be wary of the promise of a cure without an explanation of the process of recovery, clinical reasoning or ongoing self-care.

Can a physiotherapist give medical advice?

Whether seeing a physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath, always remember that allied health professionals are not medical doctors and as such, medical advice should always be sought from a qualified medical practitioner (any professional with an MD qualification). Be careful not to confuse medical doctors with allied health professionals who are doctors of their profession (this is often a PhD not an MD). If your allied health practitioner is also a medical doctor, they should have the MD qualification prominently displayed.

How can a physiotherapist help then?

Physiotherapists use exercise prescription and manual therapies (including massage, dry needling, joint mobilisation, etc) combined with a number of analysis and clinical testing techniques to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent injury, reduce pain, increase mobility and so much more. In a nutshell, if your condition is related to movement (or the inability to move), chances are your physiotherapist is the best person for the job.

I'm still confused... who should I see?

If in doubt, consult your GP and they can refer you to the best practitioner for your case.

Why should I see the physio's at Rebound Sports Physiotherapy?

At Rebound Sports Physiotherapy, our practitioners take an evidenced based, biopsychosocial approach to treatment. This means they consider all the factors that may be contributing to your injury to develop a tailored treatment plan both to assist your recovery and prevent re-injury. So, who is the best physio for the job? Although there are no specialties within physiotherapy, members of our team do have some special interest areas that they enjoy working with. All of our practitioners come from a strong sport and exercise-based background with a solid understanding of all musculoskeletal disorders. Within this, as a runner himself, Jarrod enjoys working with runners to help prevent injury in competition or return them to pre-injury form, Karen enjoys working with pelvic dysfunction and Pilates based rehabilitation, Lakshmi is an expert in injuries of the hip, currently undertaking a PhD on the topic and Ann, as an APA titled sports & exercise physiotherapist loves all things sporting related.
